Upcoming SciFi films
Discussion
Someone posted these on another forum I visit, and I thought them worth repeating. Along with my comments, as I'm an egotistical sod sometimes
District 9

2012

Daybreakers

Moon

My comments :
Nice selection All look good for different reasons.
District 9 looks "proper" SF. What ID4 should have been. Nice, if somewhat predictable, use of South Africa though for the apartheid angle. Alien Nation vs 28 Days Later.
2012 : If this isn't made by Jerry Bruckheimer or Michael Bay, I'll eat my hat. Looks fun from a popcorn angle though.
Daybreakers : Nice development on the daywalker idea of Blade - possibly prompted by True Blood's series success. I've always rated Sam Neill and this is a pretty heavy cast too. Looks like Neill could be good as a "baddie" (I can't recall a morally negative role for him - no doubt someone can correct me).
The Moon : Saw this trailer a week or so ago - that, Sam Rockwell and the production ideals behind it mean I'm thinking this could be the surprise indy hit of the year. Definitely looks like one worth watching.
And why not...

Sam Neill was not exactly the good guy in Event Horizon.
Definitely think Moon and District 9 (Alien Nation - for the 21st Century) will be worth a watch.
Personally I'm looking forward to the release of 'The Road'.

Although the trailer is a bit naff (randomly inserted bit at the beginning, suggesting the 'event' is environmental/ecological
), it's not supposed to be a true reflection of the actual film. *Fingers crossed*

By all accounts its low budget (no cgi, thankfully) and focus on characterisation makes it a bit of a mind-bender, but apparently well worthy of you concentration.
Yes, it's David Bowies son that's made it, but the thing I didn't know about this guy is that he has a PhD in A.I. The reviewers commented that he brings his intelligence to bear on the script.
Can't wait!

James Cameron's Avatar is due out round Christmas which promises to change the way you view films. It is supposed to be utterly mind bendingly awesome going on test reels they showed recently at a hush hush press conference in Amsterdam.
Supposedly its the next leap-forward in 3-D viewing...although you'll still need to use the specs apparently.andy_s said:
Wasn't there a film being made of 'Altered carbon' or 'Black Man'? Heard noise about it a few months back but nothing since. Look forward to seeing how awefull they can make it in their Hollywood styleeee...
I don't think I could bear to watch a Hollywoodisation of AC. It is one of my all time favourite novels and 'movie makers' don't have the best rep for book to screen adaptations...
To the OP. Cheers for posting those links, they look cracking, well, all apart from 2012 which is just laughable!

Actually, there's loads of CGI.By all accounts its low budget (no cgi, thankfully)
Just not "giant robot" or "alien fighterplane and lasers" CGI.

We knew that by using some old school techniques like model miniatures, a retro (and cost effective) production design, and then by building a layer of
contemporary CG effects on top, we could create a hybrid live action/CG style. It would create a sumptuous and textured look; beyond what you get with pure CG
