Apparently the administrator was entitled to look at bids as a whole, and not necessarily take the highest immediate cash value. The Onion's bid was lower, but was with the approval of the creditors (the Sandy Hook victims). The victims preferred it partly because it allowed them effectively to redistribute the damages more fairly, and partly because the bid would block Jones from continuing to use the name (I believe the administrator was also entitled to take that last part into account).
