I need a sheet of 12mm ply for a garden project so just done a quick google search to get an idea of pricing. B&Q list both hardwood and softwood sheets but the hardwood is a bit cheaper than the softwood

Both appear to be suitable for interior and exterior use (it's going to be fully painted anyway) but I would have expected the hardwood to be a lot more expensive than the softwood version, am I missing something?

ps. I know B&Q isn't necessarily the best place to source materials but it's just one sheet and it's convenient!

I've just bought a sheet of 12mm exterior grade (Chinese) plywood 8ft v 4ft, for £13.00 from my local timber yard.

It seems OK, but they did have dearer stuff.

Normally with ply the hardwood is only the facing so in cost terms it’s not a lot.

I’d guess b&q are reorganising / shifting stock so have a deal on the hardwood ply.

It probably won’t make a lot of difference to you but you might as well have the hardwood, especially as it’s cheaper.

The Hardwood is BB/CC, so one slightly tatty face and one potentially rough as hell.

Softwood doesn't state the Grade. Whilst it says "Grade...3" that should be Class 3 (moisture resistant), there's no Grade mentionned.

The advantage of buying local is you can select the sheet you want. Go and have a look, pick the best looking bit.

from what you have linked, it seems the hardwood is 3 ply and the soft 5 ply

Looks to me like 7 ply (softwood option)
