Hi All,

Hoping for some help.

New to us house. GU10 downlight literally blew up after a bright flash when switched on this morning. Glass all over the floor. ‘Downlight’ switch on RCD kicked in (although other lights in adjacent rooms also weren’t then working). There are two “sets” of lights in the kitchen ceiling, each has its own switch on a double, dimmable socket.

I took the chance to “practice” on one bulb that I noticed last night had died on Set One. I then managed to get the remaining base of the blown bulb out and replaced with a fresh bulb on Set Two. RCD flicked back and Set One works as normal, but no lights come on in Set Two.

What’s happened and how can I fix it or is it a job for someone who knows what they’re doing!?

Thanks in advance,
J

From your description it sounds like the dimmer module controlling Set Two may be dead? Bypass it & see if the lights come on.

Thanks for that.

Total novice here, so how would I do that? Hopefully pic of the switch posted below:

If you want to learn a bit: turn the power off at the consumer unit - right off, just to be safe. Then prise those two round caps off & unscrew the faceplate, pull it out a bit & post a clear picture of how the wires are connected.

Dimmers and downlights are a world of pain.

Some bulbs not compatible, some claim to be compatible, but turn out not to like some dimmers.
Some dimmers don't meet standards.
Some bulbs can damage some dimmers and so it goes on.

Some of these things can get quite warm, and I'd assume that's what split the knobs.

Thanks All

I think I’ll take a look for a local sparks. The wiring in this place is so complicated it’s untrue. The previous owner was obsessed with plug sockets (mainly unswitched - why?) and there’s trunking all over the place and there are multiple RCDs etc!

@silentbrown - it was like that when we moved in last week!

Thanks again
