Tenant damaged a flat - how much to charge them?

Asking for my brother - his tenant moved out of their rented flat, but has left some damage (to the kitchen units and the vertical blinds).
The total is more than the deposit.
Can he keep the deposit and charge them more as well, enough to cover the repairs?

What do you mean"keep the deposit"? It should have been put in a deposit protection scheme so if the tenant doesn't agree on the cost of the damage it may well be TDS how much is refunded.

Let’s assume that the deposit is in a registered scheme, then he can put in an application for damage recovery and if the adjudicated amountv(if contested by the tenant) exceeds the deposit then he will get it all.

If thereafter there is an amount still owing then he can pursue them through MCOL or the courts, depending on quantum. I think it’s an £80 fee for MCOL. Even if he is awarded a sum as a result, then next issue is getting money out of the tenant.

Was the a Inventory with pictures done at the start of the tenancy ?

It looks like the basic answer is "yes" provided it can be supported by evidence.
I'll feed that back and see what evidence there is.
