Cutting a long story short... We've had something big in the loft/roof space over the spring and summer that wasn't interested in traps (Nutella/peanut butter FWIW...) I'd blocked various holes but couldn't work out how they were getting in until we had friends round for a BBQ and a bd fking rat was spotted climbing a tree that was brushing the gutter and vanished into a hole in the soffit.

So, tree cut, hole blocked and no more bird food and we're now not hearing anything.

But we have ducks so the rats have migrated rather than fked off completely.

The issue we have is various feral cats and buzzards/kites/owls that might pick up the bodies, and I really don't want to harm them.

So is there a poison that won't harm carrion feeders?

If it poisons the rat, then whatever eats the rat will also get a dose.

Some of the baits contain anticoagulants, they used to be plain warfarin, and the rat dies of a brain haemorrhage or similar, but the doses are rat sized. So OK for all larger animals.

See here https://www.tbcandme.com/faq

Some aren't anticoagulants, but I don't rate them.

Big Cheese products work for me, but put them in rat boxes, which are designed to stop other larger animals eating the bait,( but not the dead animals)

Buy this and the rat box to go with it.

Or some cheap mousetraps from ebay. But they kill /trap anything that puts a paw inside!

When you say traps what kind of traps were you using ? We’ve got electric traps which seem to work well with various rodents (mostly mice but has killed a few rats)….baited with something like Nutella. Rat gets electrocuted and dropped on the lawn for the Kite’s breakfast. We did hear one rat get zapped once…clearly wasn’t enough to kill it though as trap was empty when we checked it.

Some rat visions contain fiberglass, this stays in the rats system and basically as they move it causes internal bleeding, they squeeze through gaps etc which speed up the process.

Our local park has had a problem with a member of the public feeding birds etc with seed that's got vitamin K in it, the antidote to warfrin.
They have had to use something stronger and much more expensive, also had the rat man in daily and cordon off a area to stop dogs getting in.
My dog found one out in the open, couldn't leave it, using a poop bag I picked it up by it's tail, the skin slipped off the tail so I had to repick it up and dispose of it,

Big snap traps and live trap cages. I do have a goodnature trap that has 20 mouse kills to its name which doesn't seem great value and was ignored by the rat(s) in the loft. Possibly new bait needed.

Rats are clever & will avoid poison or stuff they know is bad/unfamiliar. As you’ve seen they ignore bait you put out.

One of the key differences between mice v rats is they need a source of water, which if you’ve got ducks, they will have. You can assist the wildlife in dealing with them by making their routes between food/water/shelter more exposed (cutting grass /removing things to hide in) so they are seen easier. You can then set traps at points of refuge along the way as rats will naturally want to use the cover tunnels etc enroute. You will have rats until you remove the easy options for them
