I've got one of these and I'm pretty sure it controls the socket for a washing machine below it behind the kitchen units. We don't use it. But why the hole?
Presumably I can just replace it with a single socket and not reconnect the wires to the socket below.

The hole is for a cable from an appliance so it can be hard wired in - thus negating the need for a three pin plug into a wall socket

If it is already active the appliance cable will be buried in the wall and it will exit somewhere.

Odd

That’s usually for a flex from an fixed appliances like a hot water boiler or a electric radiator , never seen one fitted to isolate a socket below the worktop, although it does the same job

Yes you can just swap it for a socket and leave the out going spur to the socket below disconnected and in block

Except it leaves the cable pointing forwards rather than down (like the sort I fitted behind my WM).

Thanks. Wouldn't surprise me if it was just what was to hand when it was put in. Lots of that sort of thing going on!
I shall take it out.

dhutch " ask an electrician..." is the man but my guess without any testing is that the photo socket and the one below could both be spurred off your ring main which I believe is non compliant if there is no 13amp fuse regulating the spur.

As opposed to the photo socket being some kind of control for the lower socket - hope that makes a bit of sense.

Just a guess
