Gardeners - shelf life of grass seed?

Any gardeners in the house? I have found an unopened sack of grass seed dated April 01 - is that only fit for the bin now? Not sure how long these things last.

Try sprouting some on a window ledge if it srows it probably ok!

That's weird - I've been wondering the same thing. I've got some from last spring, which IIRC sprouted quite quickly on my dodgy bare bits of lawn, but have done nothing at all yet this year. I may have put it down too early, but I did wonder whether it was still any use?

one it warms up outside it should grow! make sure the birds havnt eaten it!

Thanks Matt. Is that just a case of a small pot of earth with some sprinkled on top? I really have no idea about gardens!

Also helps if you put it in a clear freazer bag too! acts like a mini greanhouse.

Actually if you put it in a freezer bag and put it in the freezer before sowing it will increase the germination rate.
New seed (less than one year old) also improves germination rate.

Old seed, just increase the "scattering rate", the birds 'll love it
