Just a quick question that hopefully someone has a quick answer/idea about. It's quite likely that I'll be starting a 6 month+ contract soon. I can commute from where I am (parents house) but it's a bit far and besides, I'd rather have my own place.

Obviously I wouldn't want to get tied in for 12 months in case the job only turns out to last for 6. Is it uncommon to get a place for only 6 months? What tends to be the done thing? Never rented before apart from when I was at uni, so it's all new to me.

Most rental properties are 12-month, but, importantly in your circumstances, have a six month break clause...

There are lots of properties available for 6 months, but the break clause might suit you - if the job's great roll the contract on, if not, quit the place.

Depends where you are as well matey - I'm a landlord in the NW & only do 6-month AST for new tenants. Works well for both parties I feel.

Thanks for the replies. Good to know about the break clauses, gives me some idea of what to expect.

The contract is in Hitchin. Letchworth might be a possibility, but I know a fair few people in Bedford so that appeals (plus will be cheaper I think) even though it's a bit further.
