Is this damp or a leak ?

The spot was behind a cupboard( cupboard was not pushed right up against the wall and there was a gap) but recently smelt something…

The other side of the wall is a shower room and there is UFH.

Probably shower enclosure leak.

Yes, if it isn't an external wall then it most probably has something to do with the shower.

It's an internal wall therefore more likely to be a leak than "damp" from a cold spot.

As an investigation starting point it might be worth chopping out that section of affected plaster

If the brickwork is damp it suggests a leak permeating through from the shower room.

If the brickwork is less damp is suggests the damp might be the result of a cold spot in the cupboard room.

It does look like it's going to be a leak in the shower room.

That's how I would approach it.

+ As an afterthought, the wallpaper choice suggests a longstanding damp problem that has been covered over.
