We are looking to have some new windows put in.

The old ones are timber. We currently have plantation shutters too.

Is it ok to fit the new windows whilst the shutter frames are still in place?

Its going to be a lot of work to remove them. They are not fixed to the window frames but they are fixed to the timber trim if that makes any sense so removing them will likely cause damage.

The fitter says he should be able to work around them.

Thoughts?

The timber trim will be fixed to the windows ? Anything is doable if your careful and take your time but there is always a risk of damage when removing windows. A lot will depend of the fitter.

Yes they are saying they will leave the very outer parts of the windows in situ and then remove the old windows.

I dont know the technical names for the parts but basically internally there is basically a wooden "frame" so to speak which the sash windows currently sit in. Thats the bit they are going to leave. The shutters are attached to that.

Externally its all going but I am not bothered about that as a) it needs to go and b) there is nothing attached to it.

IYSWIM.

Yes it’s fine, we do it all the time if the customer doesn’t want any damage and have to decorate. It might be best to cut out the bottom of the box and replace if it’s badly rotten.

Yes they are doing that its only the sides and top that will stay.

OK thanks - you think its ok then to leave the shutter frames as they are to prevent disturbing the finish?
