Define what you mean by a "bothy"?

To me a bothy is a building provided for travellers in rural places, usually hill walkers, cyclists etc. It is open to the public on a trust basis. Many are run by Mountain Bothy Association.

What is a personal bothy? Is that part of the hutting in Scotland?

True; being in the south it was easier to search online than drive to Scotland and do a survey!

So, not a summerhouse but a winterhouse...

Perhaps the OP can tell us if he wants stone, brick, tin or wood.

It's not a bothy if it's not publicly accessible; a but'n'ben is more like what the OP is describing. Good luck getting planning for one.

It could be a private bothy... spin

I see it as more of a folly really. Or maybe a fothy.

Trying to get anything built that doesn't fit the council's local plan is definitely a folly. hehe

No requirement at all for it to be publicly accessible - the term bothy comes from the Gaelic bothan which just means hut or small cottage. It is obviously traditional that some bothies are used publically which lead to the creation if the Mountain Bothies Association but there are still loads of private locked bothies.

Most farms here in Aberdeenshire have a bothy or two that was originally used as farm workers accommodation. Ours is hardly used these days but is quite a nice little place to sit with the fire on and have a few drinks.

Planning might be an issue OP but if you frame it right you'll have more chance of being successful. What you need is a "store for your tools" and "shelter for when you're working on your land."

Indeed planning exists for a reason OP, you do need to check.

good points re planning on private land away from roads so should be no problem.....
