Cutting the mesh off a garage door lintel

Hi everyone,

I'm swapping out the old up and over garage door for a sectional. I want to know if it's ok to cut this mesh off the lintel which goes across the opening.

My plan is to cut off the mesh along the lintel then tap in or grind off the pegs (shown circled in red). First of all is this ok, and any suggestion for what to seal any exposed metal with?

The mesh is just a key for plaster so unless you want to plaster your garage...
