Wondering if anyone can help identify what this is:

It flew in through an open door seemingly attracted by the light. It was fairly big for a bug and i'd not seen anything like it before.

Yep scooped it up in the pint glass, tried to take some photos (not very successfully), then took it to the bottom of the garden and let it go.

Without reading the other posts I'd say that is a cockroach.

As said, a cockchafer. I was in rural France years ago when there was an incredible hatch of the things - like something biblical. You could hear them crunching under the wheels of cars, and there were loads of frogs and toads out feasting on them.

Aka May Bugs cos they turn up en masse one day in May.

They covered my school's swimming pool one year, it was a huge swarm.

Definitely a cockchafer, I had one in my bathroom last year, sounded like a bloody albatross in there!
