Introduced to water
Discussion
Took 3 month old Milly to the lake for a strole this morning to introduce her to the delights of paddling and splashing

Not quite brave enough to let her off the lead in a public place yet, so a long stroller lead to practice with, but she loved the water. It was funny watching her thinking, opps whats that on my face, oops whats that in my ear

Our lab oscar loves the water, caannot get him out once he gets in.
Poppy our pup however seems to hate it, tried to introduce her at 15 weeks and she hated it, seemed very unsure and couldnt wait to get out.

Milly was unsure at first, just touching the edge and then moving away. So I threw some stones in and the splashes got her attention, then her water dog/retriever head seemed to kick in to action. She hasn't gone deep enough to swim yet though.
I have read on other lab web sites about some retrievers just not liking water. For example, if the pup came from a line of show dogs as apposed to working or just pets.
It will be embarrassing if I have to have water wings fitted to her

It took a while to get my dog used to water. A trip to the beach did it in the end. He a funny dog, he waits at the edge of the river or lake and won't go in unless you say he can. We never trained him to do this, but it's very handy.
I think you should be brave and let the dog off the lead at every possable occasion. It won't want to go far at such a young age, and it will get used to it freedom. I do worry if you wait too long, when you let it off, it realises what it'd been missing and then you can have problems. Round this way it seem that 80% of dogs we see on a walk are kept on a lead. It seem such a pity and they get far more exercise and sitmulation.
