Had a bit of a nightmare over the weekend.

Had Denzel, my staffordshire bull terrier, at my parents house. They've got a nice big garden so I take him there for a run about. I was helping with some DIY in the garden and had left Denzel to roam around as per usual.

He usually just sniffs around the bushes, plays with a ball for a while then eventually finds a sun spot and lies down.

However this time for some unkown reason (possibly spotted another dog?) he decided to try and jump over the fence at the side of the gate down the side of the house.

Unfortunatley this fence is made up of spiked wooden posts, and he didn't quite make it over.

I heard a horrible noise and went running round to see him hanging by his rear left leg from the fence :-(

He got free just as I got there and went running off. I got to him to see a massive gash in his belly, with bits hanging out of it. Not good.

He didn't appear to be in any pain and was still wagging his tail etc.

I pushed what was hanging out back in and patched him up and an emergency trip to the vets. They took him straight in for an operation. They removed some of the fat and cleaned the wound out and then stitched him up.
Due to the space that was left he had to have a drain fitted.

It's now been 5 days since this happened and he is pretty much back to normal, although he has the stitched wound obviously!

Thankfully he didn't damage anything vital and just cut himself and had some fat removed...I think he was pretty lucky!

The only time he complained was the night he came back from the vets...still very groggy and moving was obviously sore for him. Apart from that he's been a real trooper.

Here's a picture of the wound from yesterday.

You can see the hole at the top where the drain was, and also a lot of brusing around the area. It looks like it caught him just near one of his nipples and then penetrated where the wound is.

I've put it in a spoiler tag just incase people don't want to see it...although it's not that bad really

Wow definitely a lucky escape, poor Denzel! It would've been painful even if he didn'd't show it. Glad he's doing ok. Just keep a ck that the redness doesn't spread too much more smile

Wow a lucky escape there. Thought it was cats who had nine lives.

Glad he is well.

The redness is dying down day by day so thats definitely a good sign!

He's back at the vets on Tuesday to see about getting the stitches removed.

One strange thing which I'm a bit puzzled about is since this has happened he has a big lump on the back of his neck.
The vet suggested it could just be from where he's had injections and they have sort of gathered in that area and not spread out. But it's still there quite obvious almost a week after he had them. Has anyone heard of that happening before from a dog having injections?

Thanks for the replies

Glad to hear he 'got away with it'.

We had a fraught time a couple of weeks ago with our Shepard/ collie cross. I threw a stick for her to chase. Unfortunately she jumped up and caught it long ways on and it rammed down her throat.
It resulted in an overnight stay on a drip at the emergency vet's. followed antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs and an xray a few days later. A scary thought that we could have lost her just by throwing a dog a stick. I'm also thankful that she was insured as the £500 bill stung a bit too.

They can take a couple weeks to go down, do keep an eye on it though as very very occasionally they can abscess (I stress this is NOT common)

Glad the wound is looking good smile

Bit of an update...

He has all his stitches out now and it's looking almost fix, still a few little bits of scab here and there.

The lump on his neck has eventually went down, although you can still feel it there.

He's back to his normal self now, as if nothing happened!
