The last few months we've all talked about how old our faithful staffy has become noticeably older and the conversation came up about knowing 'when' the time would be and how we would deal with putting him to sleep if we felt it was right.

Nino is our 16 year old brindle staffy, and he hasn't had the best health over the years. Lots of operations to remove growths and cysts, as well as having to deal with near enough total loss and hearing, and having to adjust to a new baby for the last 2 years.

Over the last week, he has started to lose control of his functions and has been sick in the house a few times. He is now very unhappy looking and has developed a very large growth on his side virtually overnight.

I came to the decision last night that if he wasn't looking any better today that perhaps now is the time to call the vets, and unfortunately today he looks worse and doesn't even want his favourite treats.

I've booked him in to our local vets this afternoon for 5pm, and even now I am crying my eyes out typing this, not sure if I should do it even though I know it's right.

This is without doubt one of the hardest decisions I have ever made, but I know it is the right thing to do for him. I just wish we could have pets for longer, it is so hard to say goodbye.

So sorry to hear about this OP. I don't like reading these threads, not only for the sadness for the OP but also for the fact that it reminds all us dog owners that 'that' day will come for all of us frown

If the vets visit is your staffy's last, I hope you can take comfort in the fact that you were there to comfort him in his last moments.

My sympathies OP.

No consolation, I know, but 16 is a bloody good innings for a Staffie.

Really feel for you, Alex.
I don't dare think that far ahead with our nearly 4 year old Staffy.

Sorry to hear the news OP,sadly that day always come too soon...

The Last Battle
If it should be that I grow frail and weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this, the last battle, can't be won.

You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.

We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.

Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end

And hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree,
It is a kindness you do to me.

Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.

Don't grieve that it must be you,
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close,we two, these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Horrible, the worst thing in the world is seeing you're dog slip away.
Enjoy the fact you have saved suffering.

If he was human he would be kept alive no matter the pain and suffering. Us pet lovers have more compassion. It hurts like f'ck but is for the best. If only we could treat out olds with the same respect!

Well done a true human /dog manitarian.

I like dogs. But if you really believe that, you've had an increadibly lucky life!!!

OP, sounds like you've been a great owner, your dog has had a great life and has been very lucky.

I feel for you OP; I'm close to having to make the decision for one of my ten year old springers. Hardest thing I've ever had to do.

Thanks for all your kind messages everyone, it really does make me feel better knowing I'm not the only one who feels heartbroken and upset over losing their dog.

Here's a photo of 'stinky' as he was affectionately called..

RIP Stinky smile

The smile is there to remind us all of the wonderful gift we have in a life with a dog.
