Like most people when the weather is hot we have the back door open all day.

The dogs come and go as they like but they were coming inside for their water bowl and I was worried that I'd miss when it was empty.

So I had an idea, I got a washing up bowl (£2 at Tesco - probably a lot cheaper elsewhere!) and filled it with water and put it outside.

Our two dogs love it, they haven't drunk from the indoor water bowl for days.
But I have notice that the outside bowl gets a green film on the bottom very quickly, so every time I fill it, 2/3 times a day I clean it out.

Hope I'm not telling you stuff you already knew.
Just thought I'd mention it.

In this weather I have lots of water bowls dotted about the place.

The idea being that Bob can't move anywhere without passing one, and hopefully thinking "Oooh! A drink!"

I have 3 or so bowls outside. One inside the tool shed, (it has a dog flap on the door), one outside the bottom door, and one in the shade near the barn.

Yep same as, back door open all day but we have a double water bowel in the kitchen and a big pond in the garden so sorted, the thing is when Murphy is drinking from the pond the fish all come up around his mouth and are not afraid but when the little one drinks they all stay away probably because she will try and grab them, Murphy is black and white the little one is golden so maybe fish can distinguish color ?

We gave up on water bowls along time ago when we had three labs. One of them could drain it themselves after a walk. We now use a bucket like you would use to clean the car with. It lasts them ages and it never gets empty before one of us refills it for them.

What are you cleaning the bucket out with?
Do you live in a hard water area?

We never clean our bucket out and there is no green film.

I don't keep any water outside for our retriever as this may encourage him to stay out longer than he may want to. It also makes it to easy for him to get a drink where as if the water is inside, he has to come in to get it. Isn't that the best thing all round?

Our dogs live in a kennel outside all year round. Having their water inside the house would be a bit pointless. They move into shade on their own when they get too hot.

My dog would - if possible - only drink water coming out of the end of the garden hose in a fine jet.

Bowls are a very poor second as far as he's concerned.

Here its direct from the tap is best.
Also have a paddling pool that we fill on hot days. Some of the dogs in the past would lie in it, current ones just drink it.
Otherwise there are two buckets full in the garage and a large washing up bowl in the house. If they get too hot they come in and sleep on the tiled floors.

Our puppy deals with the heat by putting both front feet into his water bowl and jumping up and down until all the water is on the floor. Then lying in it.

I've ordered him a toddler sized paddling pool. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any small, cheap rigid ones in stock, so he has an inflatable. Can't see that surviving his teeth and claws long, but then it was only a tenner.

Yeah, that would have been perfect. I was actually looking at that before I gave up on finding one in stock locally, and then didn't think to look for one to be delivered. Oh well, I'll see how the inflatable one bears up to teeth and claws!

Just scrubbing it with a washing up brush and giving a good rinse out. Not really a hard water area.

I thought that it might be the sun that does it, moved the bowl to a spot that is in the shade all day and it's still doing it. It's not a big problem because even on cooler days I still change the water twice a day.

We have had that one now for over 2 years. Not damaged yet and the dogs love it.
In summer we have one of them filled up for them to paddle in, drink from, we also have a Drinkwell Big Dig water fountain in the kitchen which will last quite a while before we need to refill and we have various other water bowls around the place. We also left a bowl outside most of the year under the table and it collects rainwater. The dogs seem to prefer this to clean water, so we just left it there.

Our cat is a wee bit of a pain when it comes to water.

Despite having a drinking bowl in the kitchen, she barely touches it: and instead every time she notices anyone going upstairs, she follows, runs to the bathroom door, and stands there shouting...

So we have to go in, turn the bathtap on, and wait whilst she jumps into the bath and drinks from the stream of water until she decides she's had enough - at which point we can turn the tap off, and go and resume our lives again.

But we don't mind, bless her biggrin

Yeah, seen those - do your cats use it then? How did you get them to start using it, or did they just warm to it straight away?
