Why the hell do some flies hang around lampshades? Don't they ever get bored?

That is all.

I think it's something to do with them orienting themselves with the moon, but not having the mental capacity to deal with actually reaching the "moon" (or lamp) so it just confuses the hell out of them. Also it takes their eyes much longer to adjust to light/dark so once they get close to the light bulb they can't see anything else so stay there.

How did they find that out? As compound eyes don't have irises I don't see a mechanism unless it's chemical.

From what I could gather, the individual "facets" of the compound eyes start to combine their output to the same "sensor" in the eye to give a bigger signal in the dark and vice versa. They have pigment cells between each "facet" which can be turned on or off to divide or combine the light "sensors" which take a while to sort themselves out.

Why do flies always try and return to the same spot?

Is it as simple as they've found something tasty there?

The little sods do this in my house whenever I open a window. I have found one of these to be both effective and fun.

I ahve just ordered several of these for the hosue and for gifts! To think I have been killing moths with car magazines:

Autocar - Too light
Evo - Not glossy enough to wipe moth guts off
C&SC - A bit heavy. Unwieldy and likely to damage the house.
Octane - Perfect!
