A Dignified End
Discussion
Our Springer x Collie, Phoebe, was diagnosed with an anal gland tumour a few months ago.
She stopped eating a couple of weeks ago and went downhill but an antibiotic injection perked her right up and she was her normal self until yesterday when she stopped eating again. She was losing strength quickly so we made the heartbreaking decision to have her put to sleep yesterday afternoon rather than have her suffer the pain, various horrible symptoms and indignity that cancer gives.

Nice words mercuryrises, sorry to read about Phoebe, a lovely looking dog. My daughters dog Missey (one of our puppys)has just been diagnosed with the same thing, she is a working cocker spaniel 13 years old fit as a flea, you wouldn't know anything was wrong apart from blood in her poo and she struggles to go sometimes, just brought her home after 3 days 2 nights at the vets for investigation and that was the diagnosis, inoperable, she is fine in herself and running about as normal, soon as she walked out of the vets she jumped straight into their large pond so no change there, she loves water, so it is very hard to accept, just going to wait and see what the daughter is going to do, thank god its not our decision.
I'm sure she will,
We have Murphy, Missey's brother with us, he was 1st borne 1st litter from Jazz who we lost last year at 15 1/2, bad enough loosing her.
The daughters vet bill came to £2300 I think they have had her over being a girl, probably pays to have insurance which she doesn't.
Sorry for your loss OP

I may be biased but she was one of the nicest natured dogs I have had the pleasure of having. She adored me (much more so than my wife) and I used to take her everywhere with me, including to work. She loved the car too and would quite happily sit in the boot with the lid open all day while I would be doing stuff. I could never be angry with her for long if she was naughty - if I looked at her the wrong way her ears would drop and you could see her world start to fall apart. She once ate the headlining of a car I had when I stopped at a shop for something when she was in the chewing stage.
I held her head when she went to sleep and it was really peaceful. We have two other dogs. One really bonded with her over the last few months and he is visibly quiet. It helps to talk and I have spent the last week reflecting on all the times she made me feel good.
There is nothing like the love of a good dog and that is exactly the reason we put ourselves through the heartache because the good times make up for it.
Thanks people.

It was the worst day ever when i had to have my dog 'put to sleep'.
You did the right thing, no need to suffer like humans are forced to.
Not looking forward to the day i have to do the same to my eldest grey. She is getting worse by the day, arthritic hips. She's so happy most days but seeing her try and walk is awful.
No signs of pain so she will stay with us for hopefully a while yet.
A friend and fellow poster on here recently had to do the same after 15 years, it's hard.
I salute you sir for doing the right thing.

. You've done the right thing for your friend - you can't do more than that.
