While browsing another website (sorry Pistonheads), I read a thread posted by someone whose dog had died as a result of getting its collar caught in another dog's jaws and choking. This isn't something I'd considered before and got me thinking. I've just been using a buckled collar on our terrier, which would obviously be difficult to get off in an emergency.

Would a "snap" type collar be better? I was put off them by the thought of them coming off accidentally. Is that a real risk?

None of my dogs wear collars. I use a slip lead for walking and the scruff of the neck if i need to get hold of them.

Very unlucky scenario frown, working dogs generally better off not wearing due to being in under growth etc but rare to hear a dog being strangled just because of a collar. usually collar and lead.

The law still requires a tag on a dog when in public, so the easiest way to comply with this is to have a collar.

I keep the collar on mine tighter than a lot of people seem to do, I can slip three fingers under it but no more. There's no chance that a dog could get its teeth under there.

Our dogs only wear collars out for a walk.

Same here. A nylon web (adjustable) with a plastic buckle type clasp.

Does being microchipped (and registered) count as having a tag?

No unfortunately not. One day the law will catch up. Maybe when microchipping becomes enforced?

I do think people leave collars too loose on their dogs, correctly fitted will reduce risks more (they are not common even so)

Working dogs don't need a tag when working or training.

Fortunately every walk is a training exercise wink

Happened with our dogs once, one got their jaw caught under the collar of the other nearly choking him. Luckily I was in the house and managed to sort it out.

Now one wears a slip lead as she has a really thin neck and the other's collar is tight now.
