Hello all,

As the thread title suggests we are about to get ourselves a puppy for the first time and i'm just looking for some advice. My missus has had a rescue dog in the past but not a puppy.

We are getting the puppy from a rescue pound in Spain (we live in Jersey). Sounds a bit random but it is all well organised by a charity over here.

The puppy will be arriving in about 6 - 8 weeks time when she's about 16 weeks old, once rabies jabs and other vaccinations have been completed.

Has anyone got recommendations of books or 'idiots guides' to looking after a puppy?
Any general tips and hints that don't initially seem obvious ?
Any specific equipent we may need ?

So far i've been using the Kennel Club website as a reference and there seems a lot of good information there.

Also, as it's a resuce puppy they don't know her full background so identifying the breed is just guesswork at the moment and best we've had is that she is probably part Spaniel. Anyone else got any ideas ?

Thanks in advance

woohoo

Well done, she's gorgeous love

I just brought mine home & hoped for the best, but that was a couple of decades ago & it's all changed to crates & not on the sofa/bed now!

I'm sure people with more up to date knowledge will be here shortly to actually help smile

First thing I thought was cavalier but not too sure.

She looks gorgeous.

It may be worth you having a scout through this forum as there have been quite a few posts recently acquiring new pups and asking for tips.

Crates are popular and can be useful but being as I'm the sort that will have our dog in our bedroom and free run of the house esp when older I've never really felt the need or had the experience of crating a dog.

Yup had a flick through a few other threads and picking up a few tips.

We're a bit in the dark as to what level of training she's currently getting, she's in a foster home in Spain at the moment so presumably getting some sort of house training, but you never know so we might have to start the training off from scratch when she arrives.

Bought "The Perfect Puppy" book by Gwen Bailey earlier as seemed to have good reviews on Amazon.

Will she be ok to start crate training when she arrives and she's about 16 weeks old?

Yes, Gwen will prob have advice about them in her book, she'll still be young enough to get used to one fairly quickly. Not all dogs accept crates but most are ok with them, just ensure it's only ever a positive place for her.

Does anyone think the puppy may have behavioural issues as the chances are she was separated from her mother much earlier on than they normally would be ?
I've read that it's very detrimental to separate from mother to early, but obviously as a rescue puppy they didn't have much choice.
Does anyone have first hand experience of this sort of thing?

We have found out today that she is not actually in foster care but is at the rescue centre in kennels with her sister.
