My 6 yr old male Staffy gets on with most other dogs. One evening last winter I took him for a walk along a pathway dimly lit enough to need a torch. Coming the other way was a dog with owner ,it was a big ole lump like a mastiff type so a bit bigger than my staff. We all passed with the dogs having a quick sniff of each other. A few weeks later on an afternoon when it was daylight on another walk, we passed the house where this other dog lives. He was behind a see through wrought iron gate and just stood and looked. My staff stood and looked back at him but with a stance of, look at me I,m hard and I,m not scared of you.Since then ,every time we see this other dog ,mine goes mental ,into attack mode, hair on his back standing up ,he even knows when the other dog is being walked past our house. The other dog seems to stay calm when meetings occur. I daren't let mine approach him as I wouldn't like to see what would happen . Why is my dog like this towards him ??

Sounds like little dog syndrome, does he drive a Beemer?

My Rottie has a lot of JR terriers have a go at her unfortunately. Never a problem with big dogs or most small dogs.

Does your Staff have problems with other dogs of just that one dog/breed? Maybe chat to the owner and try and socialise them, also is yours on a lead and the other dog off a lead? I have heard that can cause problems.

Another thought, do you pet the other dog to show it's not a thought?

Yes I did think that my Staff is probably just acting hard .They are both on a lead. Mine has no problem with any other dog,in the park he takes no notice of other dogs but makes a bee line for owners to let them make a fuss of him and a belly rub. Ive never got close enough to the other dog ,although his owner says he,s a big softie.

As are my dogs 99% of the time, BUT if a dog tries to attack them they will defend themselves.

Is your dog friendly to all other dogs?

Yes my dog is friendly, obviuosly after the first meeting when all the sniffing and dominance bit is out the way .smileHe hasn't shown any aggression to any dog,and as I say he just wantsto see the owner for a belly rub .smileIt is only this one dog that seems to affect him.

It may seem like an odd thing to say, some but some just don't seem to like certain dogs. No pattern. Just in the same way we don't like certain people though we can't say exactly why.

My first lab got on with all dogs and humans, except one black dog we used to walk passed to get to the park. For some reason he just didn't like this dog, lots of growling and barking.
My last lab, again liked almost all dogs, except greyhounds. Don't know where it came from as we had him from a puppy and he was a very sociable dog.

My lab HAS to have a nemessis. In the old village it was a jack russell terrier. Just never got on with it and always barked at her. In the new village its a little brown handbag terrier thing that he now has a disliking to.

It could be that he just hates terriers though.

Yes I can see the similarity with the idea that he just does not like the other dog in the same way humans do not take to everybody. And I suppose out of approx 30 dogs that we meet over the park and on walks,to only show a disliking to 1 dog aint bad .thumbup

Some times is as simple as they just don't like each other. There's so much body language between them thats so subtle we miss it... Maybe the other dog called him gay.

My Weim is great with other dogs but has a list of (3-4) dogs, all of which have taken a bite out of him, either when he was either smaller or looking the other way, that he'd have had a go at should they try it again. There's one large GSD though that he dislikes for no particular reason... and it's mutual. Niether me or the other dogs owner know why.
