I'm struggling to understand how this came about. I know its a daily mail link so I'll bullet point the important facts http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2487849/Le...

  • Massive dog taken from a charity and rehomed with an undersized 4 year old
  • Single mother with at least one child, living in a 1 bedroom flat (which doesn't even allow dogs!) Completely inappropriate choice of home for the dog.
  • Dog has history of being abused in the past.
Could they really have picked a more inappropriate pet? Absolutely beyond belief that someone would risk putting their kid in that situation.

Seconded OP. Awful thing to happen. Seems like utter stupidity on the owners part. Dogs are not cuddly toys.

I didn't realise this was a rescue dog. Aren't the homes inspected for suitability? Such a sad story, laced with stupidity and incompetence.

The whole story is tragic. And because of multiple errors a young girl is dead.

Admittedly a while ago now, but when we last looked at rescue dogs there was a minimum age for children in the adoptive household set down by the rescue centres we visited.

Article also says the dog "may have been spooked by a firework" but the attach happened at "lunchtime" confused

The police have confirmed it wasn't the French mastiff that the pictures show her with. Also not thought to be a breed banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act (I only mention that as some of the headlines are calling it a 'pit bull' in inverted commas).

This is even more confusing...

Multiple failures there and none of it the dogs fault.

It wouldn't suprise me if fireworks had a hand to play in this. From the picture this is a dog that was happy to sit and ingnore chocolate in a kids hand; Certainly couldn't try that with many dogs.

There were calls on the radio this morning for all dogs to be muzzeled in public. Yet again this is (like every one I can remember) an attack in private on a family member (or friend), not on the street with a stranger... How will muzzeling in public help that?

The article originally said that specific pic was believed to be the dog involved... but the Daily Mail were never known for letting the truth get in the way of a good story I suppose laugh

People have an agenda.

To me, many people should be muzzled, and fettered, in public, for the safety of others.

How many dogs kill kids each year compared to how many parents kill their children each year?!!?

Yeah, wouldn't have put it past the DM to use a library picture with no relation to the actual story but the BBC used the same picture this morning.

The picture is the little girl in question, there just now seems some doubt as to whether that is the dog. Either way, all of the points about bringing a abused dog into a 1 bedroom flat with a tiny 4 year old are still valid.

From what I've heard/seen from dog rescue places in UK, I'm amazed that they gave her an unsuitable dog like this. I know of a couple of different families who ended up buying puppies from classified ads because dog homes wouldn't give them one for rather stupid reasons. Both nice families with gardens, who now have a couple of great dogs that most likely came from a puppy mill in the first place...

News tonight is showing a different dog entirely. Described as a bulldog but looks like a Staffie cross.

Will the paper have to print a apology to the wrongly accused dog? I would hope they would if they had a picture of me as a murderer.

When I first saw that pic I said 'that's no Bulldog'.
