The family and I have talked about bringing in a new member to the family, and we have finally decided that we would like an English Spaniel (with the white and brown coat).

But the problem is we are not too sure as to where we can find one.

From what i've read so far, i need to stay away from any large store that sells puppies?
I need to find a good breeder and look at the parents (if possible), and how they have been brought up.

But where do i find a list of reputable breeders?

Thanks

Kennel Club has a facility to find breeders.

However you may be able to get a rescue from places like the Dogs Trust if thats of interest?

I've not considered a rescue, as we have a child in the house, and i would want to know how the dog was brought up.
Then there is the question as to why is the dog there? Small minded i know, but if the rescue was to turn around and snap at the child, i wouldn't forgive myself.

But then again my knowledge of rescues is limited, and the bad side to rescues has obviously been highlighted by the extreme examples in the news.
I can only assume that older dogs are here too? We would like a very young dog/pup, to grow with us.

They have young dogs at rescue centers.

Not the exact breed you were after. But young, and spaniels as an example.

OP, have a look at the link provided above and read up on the various breeds of Spaniels that are detailed. I assume you are referring to a Springer Spaniel given your description so please be aware they need lots and lots of exercise and avoid any puppies that come from a "working" line as these need even more exercise and can be more difficult to train.

If you and your family can wait until next year to get your puppy I would suggest visiting Crufts at the NEC in March. Here they have an exhibition called "Discover Dogs" which has almost every breed on show with long standing owners for you to meet, dogs to fuss and get a good knowledge of what is required to own each of them.

You will also find a lot of information on the KC site about choosing a puppy and a list of approved breeders. Speak to a few of these and be prepared to wait for a puppy if you want one as decent breeders only produce puppies on an irregular basis. Also, be prepared to be interviewed by the breeder to see if you are a suitable home for one of their puppies. This is an excellent approach and ensures the puppy goes to a good home and the new owner is aware of what to expect as the puppy grows and needs training etc.

My new 9 week old Cocker Spaniel is being collected on Sunday morning biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

After a trip to discover dogs a couple of years ago, interacting with the dogs and speaking with the breeders we completely changed our mind about the breed we were sure we wanted.

We found a marvelous breeder in the end, it took me a lot of hours finding breeders, then finding breeders that were having litters and then we got lucky, but it did take more than 6 months from starting looking to bringing home our puppy.

The champdogs site is useful for finding breeders, I cross referenced that with the KC list of breeders.

We also considered spaniels, but they're a bit too high energy for us, with 2 young kids in the house also.

We're picking up another puppy from the breeder of our dog this weekend too. Can't wait smile

I'm with you on the rescue dog and young kid mixing. There are no certainties, but we got to spend a lot of time with the parents (and aunts and uncles) of our puppy and see them interacting with the children.

Thank you for the links.
The weirdest thing has happened though.
Whilst looking at some of the pages, i found a link to another site that wasn't mentioned here. Just out of interest i wanted to see if there were any Weimaraner puppies for sale; long story, but we used to have one, so we know what they are like, and really miss the old one.

Now i'm not a real believer in fate, but i found a 4 month old puppy that is being given up as the owners need to move house and cannot take him with.

The odd thing was, our first Weimie was the same age, as the breeders circumstances changed and they could no longer keep him.
This puppy has already been house trained, is child friendly (as shown in the pictures), is good with other animals and is ok with being left alone for a little while.

So far so good.

As mentioned in the posts above, with regards to rescue dogs; i guess this will be a rescue dog in a way. But as it will be coming straight from the family home rather than a rescue centre, i feel a bit better about the history and with the idea of a 'rescue'
So we are going to take a 2.5 hour trip on Saturday to see him in the house and we will hopefully be coming back with a new friend biggrin!

So a stark difference from the Spaniel idea. But we as a family would love another Weimie.

Thank you for the links and help, fingers crossed for tomorrow.

I can't f=ing believe it!!! What's wrong with some people.

I spoke to this person not so long ago and told them that i was going to come up and see the dog and take him.
In the last hour, someone else has viewed the dog and taken them. Because it was first come first serve. What the actual F***!!

Do people not abide by a verbal agreement anymore?
Pi$$ has been boiled at the moment and i'm really annoyed that they were a bunch of money grabbing aholes and couldn't wait to rid of the dog.

And breath....back to the search.

Thank you Grey Ghost.
Will take a look at this now, but unlike the situation i was in. I don't think that i will be able to see the dog in their natural environment and i have to take the word of the charity.
I will have a chat with them though, to see how they work.
