Very sorry for your loss.
You do now have the opportunity of giving another animal a loving home, I think this post is a rhetorical question isn't it?

Pics of Bentley and your new puppy are now needed.

What a great looking dog!
The pup is a sweetie too. Why are you still on PH when you could be bringing it home?
Because I am not alone in this family and I need SWMBO to be on this journey with me especially as it will be her who will have most of the responsibility of day to day training and caring for this pup.The pup is a sweetie too. Why are you still on PH when you could be bringing it home?

Only you know if it is too soon
However, you'd not be replacing your beloved Bentley, so don't think of it like that, you'd be giving another dog a loving home, in your time of need when you have a lot of love to give

Bentley looks like he was quite a character, and the pup shows promise!
Wouldn't that be a great start to 2014?
We were in a similar situation to yourself OP earlier on in the year; Humphrey our Pug was PTS, he was 11, two weeks later we heard of a French Bulldog that needed re homing.
We were wondering whether it was too soon and what about Humphrey, is it doing a disservice to him etc, however two weeks after hearing about this French Bulldog we became her owners; Daisy is now sound asleep under the covers as I type this.
We weren't looking for a dog, we wanted to wait until at least the summer, I believe these things happen for a reason and what better than re homing a dog in need, we haven't replaced Humphrey however we have filled a Humphrey sized hole in our lives, if you feel it is right then go for it.

My folks are in the same shoes - Daisy dog died on the 25th, and everyone's wondering-but-not-quite-asking how soon is too soon.
I'm with other posters, I don't think there is a too soon as long as everyone's willing and able to commit to caring for the new dog well.
All the best - Daisy was 11 when she died (also with cancer), we'd had her since she was a little fluffball at 11 weeks and we miss her desperately.
