Just had the renewal through for next year...........£583 odds. Don't know whether to or not. Barney is a Mastiff X Rottie and was ten last October. He's been on Metacam for a while now (£44 a month approx.)which the insurer pays a chunk (70%? perhaps). His mum and dad both went at 10 years old so I'm taking that as a good indication of his life span . If he had to have a major op I just don't know whether I'd put him through it, although he is still quite active ( When he's not asleep)and we're usually out for anything upto two hours a day over 2 or 3 walks.
Thoughts?

Our smooth fox terrier is 13.5 now, expected duaration is 12 years - we declined to insure him as of last year.

At his age we wouldnt put him through any major surgery, and anything else is down to us.

I've never bothered with insurance and over the years I've saved a fortune. I've had a couple of £1000+ bills and lots of smaller ones but nothing compared to the sum of the premiums over the years. I have 5 dogs now and the cost would be very high so it's much cheaper for me to self-insure. If I had one dog from a breed that tended to have problems and I lived somewhere expensive, then maybe. I suppose it depends on your attitude to risk. Most people, most of the time, will be out of pocket with insurance assuming the insurance companies make a profit but of course you could be unlucky.

If it's the same company, then £583 - meds = £60 odd quid, for peace of mind over unexpected additional complications. JFDI.

Thoughts? You're getting your leg lifted!

I've had loads of problems with my dog and he's not even 4 yet. Insurance? £8 a month. £80 excess per injury/ illness. LV pet insurance.

I don't suppose my insurance provider would be around for long though if my policy cost less than they knew they had to pay back every year? Plus he's 73 kgs so needs horse sized portions of everything. Waste of time going to any other provider now as they'll exclude all pre existing conditions.( £484 with LV) One of my neighbours was paying in excess of £1200 for two Dogue's and they're a lot younger than my dog. She went with someone else last year and got it down to approx. £900. As someone else said its probably best to take the hit and treat it as getting £400 back in treatment and then its only £180 which covers all other eventualities, so quite cheap really in the grand scheme.
