Alabama skin rot. Causes?

This Alabama skin rot, I've read that the first sign is a skin lesion, but is it caused by a scratch on a thorn or a bite or sting, or is it ingested in some way? I've also read it was first thought that it just affects Greyhounds, though this has been diss-proved.
Anyone know how it is caused?
