Seems our cat has caught a wood pidgeon in our garden, injured but not killed it.

What's the best thing to do, thinking it needs putting out of its pain but how to do it humanely? Can't use my shotgun, neighbours may object!

If you can catch it the just knock it over the head with a stick.

Or just let your cat finish if off.

The cat went to all that effort - it's a little mean spirited to take off him/her!

I mean, if he didn't want to be butchered by a cat, then maybe he shouldn't have been a pigeon in the first place.

He was asking for it, really.

Hold bird with one hand and the head with the other and pull, not too hard or the head will come off.

If you pull the head off be prepared for the headless zombie body to flap like fk possibly chasing you around the garden.

Knocked it over the head, the cat only wanted to play with & torment it or I would have let her finish the job.

A bit late! But an easy way to do it (and owning a shotgun I'm suprised you don't know) is to hold the head and swing the body through 360. Works every time. Also you can hold the bird by the the head cradling the bodyand throw the body downwards, whilst holding the head, it's the best way for chickens, in my experience, but works for most birds. Rabbits are easiest to grab and pull the head or strike the neck, which is more difficult. smile

Done that to a few pheasants in my time. Had to be careful as the kids were home & my lad in particular does like 'our' pigeons, told them the pigeon flew over the hedge but they both guessed correctly that I'd helped it do it!
