new dog time ?

it's been just under 2years since we lost our dog Charlie to old age. I'm sure you'll understand when I say that each day that has gone past I have always thought of him and we all still miss him very much. If the wind blows a door shut, then it's Charlie, if somethings missing then Charlie has taken it .....
However much we miss him, we are starting to talk about looking for a new dog, not to replace him but to bring another dog to complete our family once more. We aren't looking for a puppy, but to re home someone that needs some love in their lives. whilst charlies was a Yorkie, my own family dogs have always been cocker spaniels and so we're looking for either breed.
I've tried blue cross and dog's trust but as yet not had any luck. Does any one have any other ideas or indeed comments on rehoming rescue dogs ? I'm in Swindon / Wiltshire but will happily travel.

2 years? Good on you for rescuing a dog, that's what we plan to do in a few years time when our Cocker finally leaves us. There are plenty out there, just keep looking until the right one pops up.

We lost Hattie, my Jack Russell cross nearly a couple of months ago very suddenly. Very shocking for us all.
Meggie, our Boxer/ Border Terrier cross has dealt well with what's happened, but she's been very lonely since Hattie left so for her sake we're looking at getting another companion for her (they were together for 10 years!).
It's taken me time to come round to the idea, but although Hattie can never be replaced, I wasn't sure if it was too soon. However I have now, because I want to give another rescue a second chance and to live in a loving home Hopefully we'll have a visit lined up to see some JRT pups soon.

). We said goodbye to him June last yr. Truth is I am still heartbroken over his loss and I'm not sure I'll truly get over it but we did always say we would get another four legged friend. I really wanted my son to grow up with one (we thought it'd be Jimbo for a few more years)
We had a dogless holiday (always intended as Jimmy was supposed to be with us and there was no way I'd take another)
but it made us realise the time was right and in Nov we picked up Bryn.
He is brilliant and we are so happy but it does not stop me remebering Jimmy every day, with occasional tears (not every day anymore though) and occ calling Bryn -Jimmy!! (Bryn doesn't seem to mind

We lost Leo and eight weeks later we had Chester. Leo was, without a doubt, the best dog in the world and his death was sudden (ten minutes from being fine to dead) and desolated me. Two and a half years on, I still think about him ten times a day.
I lost his predecessor nearly 15 years ago and still talk to him at least once a day and say goodnight to them both every night without fail. I'm looking forward to snuffing it myself so I can be with all my dogs that have passed over 'the rainbow bridge'.
Getting another dog soon after they've died does not diminish from them at all, but it does help with easing the pain a bit for you. Our other dog (Phoebe) was inconsolable as an only child and we had to get another dog for her as much as for us. No I think it is a good idea. Actually I believe a puppy can keep an older dog a little younger (as long as you get it whilst the older dog is still active).Jasandjules said:

Our GSD had a complete new lease of life when we had a puppy. We bought another GSD pup (hoping it would 'learn' from the old girl before she passed, fully expecting it to occur soon), but the pup and her had 4 years together and she passed at age 14. The girls were rediculously inseperable, to the point when I was told to wait outside the vet's office with the younger pooch when the old girl went in, I was dragged into the vet's office by the much younger (and stronger) dog trying to get to her best friend. vanordinaire said:

Absolutely, we've made sure we were never without a dog. I don't understand 'too soon', it is being without a dog that really screws you up, having at least one other that you have to keep going for in terms of walks and care etc. that is essential IMHO.Someone has already posted that Ted needs a loving family...

Mushy the pug left us too soon. He was 4 or 5 when he ate a box of Indian sweets and couldn't stop being sick. We left him at the vets who said everything would be fine. They checked him every 4 hours, and he was comfortable.....until they checked him at 07:00 and he had died.
Mrs C and I still think of him daily, and still can't believe he's gone, 6 months or so later. He'll NEVER be forgotten, and his pictures will never come down.
But, life goes on and there's still so many little fellas that need good homes. If you can offer that, then please do.

Caessr.org.uk specialize in cocker and springer spaniels, please try them 1st if you are looking for a spaniel or there is preloved sometimes somebody is looking for a loving home for an older spaniel
we have two working cockers Murphy who is 14 and Amber who is 9 both as fit as fleas although Murph has started pathering in and out quite a lot now and is in his own little world sometimes but go up to him and stroke him and he seems to snap out of it other than that he is brilliant (thank god)

Sorry guys, I don't get it. I had a cat for 18 yrs, a great cat, adored her, and was very upset when she hit the snooze button. But she's dead. End of story. Now have 2 other cats. I lavish them with love and affection, but unlike my original cat, they hate me. Wouldn't give me the steam off their cat tray. Unless they are hungry. Ho hum, win some, lose some.

We have had rescue dogs for the last fifty years or so and have found that we didn't choose the dog - the dog chose us. I would suggest that, instead of looking for a specific type of dog, you have a wander around the rescue places and see which dog seems to want your attention. When we got our current dog, we had gone to several rescue places and went to the RSPCA because they had a Lab that sounded suitable. We came away with a Springer x Collie - and my (late) mother had always said she would never have a Spaniel (her father bred them!).
I don't intend to get another dog after this one goes: I'm single and a dog it too much of a tie. However, I don't know how well I will manage without a dog, so may have to "kidnap" one of my friends' dogs while they are at work!

Sounds familiar.We managed one better than being picked at the rescue centre though. Next door got a rescue dog & the first time he saw my dad he came over & refused to go home

Well i've a bit of good news ... this weekend we were passing our local blue cross (Burford) and popped in to make sure that they stillhad our paperwork on file and if they had any spaniel's or yorkies on their books. After a little chat where they explained that new dogs were listed almost immediately on the web site, and that it was for us to keep checking. We still had a look through their book and noticed a little guy, a 8yr old miniature schnauzer who had been in the kennels for a month.
He's originally from a breeding kennel so not much history, but he's on supplements for his liver (a known issue) and has a bit of arthritis in his back legs. He'll always need medication and from what we understand he had been reserved for re homing and then rejected because of this several times, even though Blue Cross are supporting his supplements too.
Happy to say that after meeting him and following the Blue Cross process he's now fast asleep in front of the radiator

We're still getting to know him, and him us and it's been interesting. He likes to dig, doesn't like taking his tablets and we have just realised we've given him a weeks worth of pain killer (Loxicom) in one day as I misread the dosage syringe... waiting for the vet to call back, but if anyone here can tell us we've not killed him my wife would appreciate it !!!
