Morning All I am having trouble with my 10 month old Akita pulling on the lead something that I did not have with my previous Akitas he is a pretty big lad for his age (over 6 stone ) and very powerful I have tried many different remedies recommended from various dog training sites but none have had the desired effect so I am debating if I should use a canny collar as they seem more gentle than a halti in that they do not pull the head to one side if anyone has had any experience with these I would be grateful if they would pass it on Thanks.

Have you tried the balance lead?

Also, what have you tried? For example, one that worked for me is simple but it takes a LOT of work. Each time the dog pulls, you stop. You wait until it is not pulling, then walk. If it pulls, you stop..... It takes ages and is very frustrating for a while as you pretty much move 100ft in about 30 mins.....

What heel training have you done with him? Collars can help obviously, but it comes down to training.

I'm opposed to 'gadgets' such as the Halti since I find dogs will only walk to heel when they're wearing it.

Far better to teach the dog to walk to heel, imo.

I can testify this works(ing)

Seb had never been on a lead. Far from perfect still but after 3 months our record is 400m hehe. You just have to keep it up and never give in.
