Strawberry cyst on Milly's leg
Discussion
Milly got over her scratching with antibiotics, turned out to be a flea allergy. So since then she has been in to get spayed. Just got the stitches out today. We noticed the other day she had a small red growth on the top of her front leg. (dog equivilent of an arm pit)
The vet said today that it is a strawberry something or other, like a cyst. Very common in young dogs and that they usually last about 3 weeks, getting bigger before turning black and dying off.
If it doesn't then we've to take her back.
This is something I've never heard of before. It does look like a strawberry too.

I'd have thought it was a histiocytoma.
Common in young dogs. They are self limiting and rarely need intervention except maybe sometimes with steroid cream but this isn't used so often these days
. Very occasionally they need surgical removal but only if they don't start reducing in size after a few weeks or get infected. Think I've only seen one surgically removed.
I have not heard it be called a strawberry cyst however so can't be 100% certain they are one of the same (plus I am not allowed as a nutse to diagnose and esp not over the internet)
In my experience they tend to just start shrinking away again not turn black before dropping off?
If after a few weeks it is not changing or getting worse then they should at least take a sample to ensure it is nothing else.

Thanks for the response Bex, slight misunderstanding there. When I said dying off, I did mean shrinking back again, not as you thought I meant, dropping off.
The vet called it a strawberry something or other because even to me, it does look like a strawberry. Probably does have a more scientific name but that's what he used to explain it to mrs tt.
