Doggy Injuries
Discussion
My old faithful greyhound, got up Monday morning 5:30am, dog went to bed 9:00pm previous night.
Couldn't stand up and was rather unresponsive.
Took him to the vet, (tried call out but they said little they could do and better bringing him in at 8). Back lower legs look bitten, all bruised too. He clearly must have laid down outside as he was covered in muck.
Vet couldn't think of a plausible solution. Fence is 6ft all round. We have 2 dogs this was the younger fitter one. One thought was he collapsed and rats got him, no sign of rats and i would have imagined they would go for the weaker dog. Normally screams like nothing you have ever heard when hurt.
Anyway he is getting a bit better with antibiotics and anti inflamitories and will be back to vets tomorrow.
Should he lick his wounds? Had the lampshade on him but it's driving him mad. Left it off for a while and he keeps licking like mad. Allegedly this is a good thing as apparently dogs have antiseptic tongues?
Will put lampshade back on tonight if anyone thinks it's better off please suggest.
Any ideas?

No do not let him lick, it's an old wives tale. Some dogs mouths do have some natural antibacterial properties but most don't. Those that do tend to have spotless teeth, I don't know many greyhounds that have clean teeth without help!
Licking will slow down healing, cause an inflammatory response and potentially introduce infection.
A cream like Flamazine is very good to use ask your vet about it and see what they say.

Hope he feels better soon. Sounds like quite an unpleasant experience for him whatever happened
Cheers Bex, 1st to respond as always. Reckon you should be paid as the PH resident vet.
Vet didn't give me the lampshade, i had it from the old b
h when she had the chop. Once he started licking i put it on him. Trouble is with it on he can't drink water, which concerned me. Off at the moment but will put it back on shortly when i go to bed.bexVN said:
Is he trembling aswell? Did he have a GA today?
No treatment today. Has been dreaming quite a bit but nothing more than usual. Stopped it now. Looked so pitiful.Sleeping soundly at the minute as usual, ears twitching and snoring. Just about to go to bed myself.
Just done the 4 leg stretch accompanied by the usual fart! Not much wrong there.
Injuries very infected and swelling. Mega doses of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory. 90% back to normal for Mr Grey.
Had a bit of a bounce when i got home and back to his old antics of finding any food in the house.
Vet was worried about cellulite-us, but fingers crossed. Initial injury still a total mystery.
Farts in the car on the way back were truly awesome, almost melted the windscreen! Chemical warfare has nowt on a poorly greyhound.

Yes cellulitis can be a real concern. Saw a greyhound suffer same (again origin unknown) she ended up on 2-3 a'bios but it got there in the end
. Have they swabbed the wound?
The good thing is you got him seen quickly initially so he'll do fine. Just out of interest have the done bloods on him?

No swabs or bloods taken, just visual inspection. State of him Monday morning i was expecting the worst. He looked terrible. Dogs really do recover so fast. Vet was amazed how well he was walking with no obvious pain. With Greys the really are wimps in general.
