My guess is that's it is some sort of tiger moth.

When I was a kid (late 1950's/early 1960's) I used to find caterpillars like these in the garden. I'd keep them in a box and feed them on gooseberry leaves from the hedge until they turned into a chrysalis. Eventually, a spectacular tiger moth (yellow & black forewings, bright orange hindwings) emerged, and was set free smile
