Does anyone here own a Greyhound? I've had 2 (currently have one, but sadly he didnt live with me as I spend 12 hours a day away from home).

He's 10 this year, had him since 2011. He's Blue (I know he looks grey) and retired just before I got him. He chose me, came to my house with people from the RGT and when he was getting told off (I stroked one of the other Greyhound's they brought) he came and hid behind me. He was the only one to make himself comfortable in the house (laid down in the kitchen) and that was the first time he had ever been in a house.

I miss him but I know he's better off at my parents, who spoil him rotten.

Sadly my other Greyhound was taken by Cancer in 2011 frown

Post pics of yours up.

The blue/grey ones are defintely one of the best colours. I've been told they usually go very quickly from the kennels. I was also told they can be a bit lively. Same with the Brindle coloured dogs. Not sure if there is any truth in that.

There are several greyhound owners who frequent these forums. There are also a few dedicated threads to retired greyhounds, but they are quite old (5 years +)

I did a thread quite recently, but here he is again. This is Herbie. We have only had him for 6 weeks, but he is part of the family and I can't see us parting with him smile Bread and raced in ireland and few races here too. Hes a lovely chap. Very friendly and purrs like a cat smile

He looks lovely. My last one was a black one, I am told they tend to go slowly as people dont like black dogs, but I'm not sure why, though I dont know if I could bring myself to own another black one any time soon as it still hurts from losing my last one.

I'll have to go check your thread out.

Mine was bread in Ireland, but raced mainly in Yorkshire.

100% right on the black ones. We looked at a couple when we were looking and they are still being advertised now and thats two months on. the kennels say the same thing.

Nearly everyone we looked at was bread in Ireland. We only came across one that was bread here.

From my limited observations, I think the racing industry is in decline. The Chandlers certainly did well out of selling the Stow as they live in the village where I work (Brookmans Park) and houses are not cheap round here...

It is a shame really, as black ones looks very handsome. They all do tbh. I'd love a brindle one, they're an amazing colour. My blue (Lofty) is quite boisterous, likes a good bark and a roo, but also loves to lay around. Gets very excited and dances around when various people go to my parents.

I often thought about taking in a few old ones who have been in the kennels, give them a nice home until they come to pass...

We've got a black (going very grey) b*tch, 9 in a couple of weeks time. Still full of beans. She's my second one, my previous one being brindle. Got both from the RGT.

No handy pic's unfortunately.

I'd love a greyhound, but sadly a long commute and working silly hours means it's not an option just yet.

Yup, 9 year old ex racer, been with us 5 years now, lazy sod, thinks he's a cat most of the time (except whenever sees cats or other Grey's/hounds...)

Beautiful temperament, ours is black with white socks and tail, sometimes looks intelligent, most of the time looks asleep, or annoyed at whatever's disturbing his sleep...will post pic when I get a chance..

She's gorgeous. They look so happy when laying on their back. My first one did it all the time, but my current one can't do it.

Yeah, my previous did all the time, while Zora doesn't and curls up into a ball, which the other one never did!

I liked this pic on my local rehoming organisation's forum.

This is an older dog called Major.

He is in the habit of having his jammies put on at bed time.

They do have huge tongues don't they!

I see yours if off the lead. Pictures like this do make me want to work with Herbie on recall. However, he went for a duck this morning and its moments like that that make me think that he just isn't suitable to taken off the lead. Its early days though. We are only on week 7.

Ours rarely lies on his back. He did it on Sunday, but he had to kick me off the sofa to do it...

I have seven greyhounds that live at home with us...my first ever greyhound (Amber) I got when she was 2 years old and she lived til she was 14 and a half and died on valentines day 2012, its no exaggeration to say i think about her every day still.

Currently have 6 boys a girl, made up of

Smiler 4 year old girl black and white
Panda 7 year old black and white
Eric 7 year old blue
Sonny 7 year old brindle
Markie 6 year old black
Johhny 6 year old black
Archie 4 year old brindle

We have 8 cats too and they all live in harmony, despite the dogs been ex racers, given careful integration almost all can be trained to be cat friendly.

Through a racing contact I have I know of a few that are awaiting rehoming and are currently been looked after by the trainer.

We have a 7 year old Black & white female who is a real gentle giant. She is a rescue ex-racer, but from tracing her history I don't think she ever made it to the track, somehow got injured in training.
They are great dogs to have, very rarely barks, only needing minimal walks at her pace and the use of a settee to lounge on.
Unusually gor a greyhound she is very comfortable with small fury animals, (we have two cats as well as a totally bonkers Hungarian Vizsla but that's another story)and off lead she isn't bothered by rabbits or such like. We have 100% confidence in her off lead, though she hates any loud bangs. Guns, bird scarers & fireworks.
Recently she had to undergo some serious dental work, removal of all bar her canine teeth. 29 removed & an £800 vet bill
grumpy
She is a much happier dog now, no bad breath and still eats all she used to when she had teeth , all except pigs ears.

Never shown aggression to anyone or anything.

Would have another one at a drop of a hat.

Poor pic of my parent´s two Spanish greyhounds (Galgols).

They are treated utterly dreadfully in Spain, thankfully these two have won the dog lottery and are living out their days in blissful idleness.

I really, really recommend then as a family pet. They´re great with my kids.

Lovely colours.

I see that web address is from Oz. I think the racing industry is much bigger over there than it is here.
