Anaemia in dogs.
Discussion
Holly has been off colour for a few days.I put it down to the heat at first but took her to a new vet this morning who took a Full Blood Profile (incl Haematology).
Results back and she appears to be slightly anaemic and borderline diabetes. He was also a bit concerned about her mammary glands. He has given her something for the diarrhoea she has had on and off for a few days.
I have to take her back in 2weeks and with a urine sample.
The vet was very thorough compared to my old practice whom I had been with for years.
I am guessing anaemia is why she has been quite lethargic recently.
Any suggestions as to how I can help her to overcome this and nip the diabetes in the bud please?

Females can have hormonal induced diabetes which can be triggered by a season. When was her last season?
It is rare but spaying can settle the hormones and reverse the diabetes. I've seen it work twice in my career. Spaying is advised on diabetic females anyway as it stabilises the diabetes.
This may explain the concern with the mammary glands, not quite sure how anaemia may be linked.

So would diabetes or impending pyo (womb infection) which often occurs 9 weeks post season. This could also cause mild anaemia.
How anaemic was she? Sl low doesn't always cause lethargy.
I am sure your vets will be considering all that I've already mentioned but you could say you googled diabetes and it came up about entire females!
Hope they get some answers soon for you.
I forget what breed is she?

I had greyhound or Springer in mind, which is why I asked. Greyhounds can get some strange conditions (which I don't really understand!)that show up with anaemia being a symptom!
They must be considering pyo as a possibility given her age, maybe worth asking about that aswell. Usually you'd get raised white blood cells (which would be picked up on haematology) but sometimes a low grade one won't show such obvious blood results.
