When the inlaws come to stay the FIL always works in our garden which is in a right state and I don't have the time to sort it out. He brought me over to a corner which was surrounded by piles of compost, vegetation etc and showed me this:

Now I don't about you but these look like chicken eggs to me. Also there would appear to be precisely. a dozen scratchchin

Our garden is entirely surrounded by a wall which is about 2m20 in height and we live in a property not far from the town centre ie not in the country side. The last I heard chickens can't jump or fly so what on earth is going on?

Looks very similar to Mallard eggs. Wikii says they can lay in enclosed gardens and the clutch size looks right.
Going by your user name have you been away for a while, so no obvious signs of visitors.

That does look pretty similar doesn't it? I've checked back a few times abd no ducks to be seen though, I guess that sadly all 12 eggs are mush.

FWIW I drill into humans not for oil so I'm at home every day, the area is 30m away from the house though and behind compost and tall weeds. There are cats in the area so it's possible they chased the mother off.
