House training
Discussion
Hello all,
We are the proud owners of a lovely Golden Retriever puppy who is now the grand old age of 16 weeks!!
So far he has been a little star in relation to relieving himself outside. However, he does still occasionally do a wee inside (and once or twice a number 2) which isn't ideal! Additionally, other than the standard sniffing and settling into position (which if we see are automatic alerts!) he doesn't really give any indication of what he's planning for example going to the back door.
Is the fact that we tend to keep our back door open when we are home going to have been counter productive to the house training process? He certainly doesn't seem to eliminate indoors if the back is open and we like to kee it open so he has more space to burn off his puppy energy!!
Any advice gratefully received!
ps When I'm not at work I'll upload a photo!

We have a rottie who is a few months old and still potty training and he still has accidents inside but when door is open at back he will go out and do his business, sounds like your doing it all right just need to be patient and it will all come together.
Thanks Spowart. This is what I thought and he does only seem to do the business if the back door is shut and we've not spotted the standard warning signs. However, I was just worried that having the back door open may be counter productive.Puppies tend to either play or sleep (when they're very young there's not much in between).
When ours was a pup I was fortunate to be between jobs and off work for three weeks (it was planned that that was the time when we'd get a dog).
During those three weeks every single time she woke up I'd just get up and walk outside .... I'd encourage her to follow, I'd keep telling her it was 'wee time', she'd do whatever and then get lots of praise. I also used to take her for a 'walk' around the garden just before I went to bed muttering 'wee time' to her.
It's amazing how quickly they catch on and other than over night mishaps (wees) in her pen during the early days I can honestly say she never did anything in the house.
