Why does my dog just want to eat poo
Discussion
It might be normal, but it's really irritating me!
We feed her James WellBeloved as it came highly recommended and have done since we got her.
We did try alternating to a few different foods but she seemed to take to them less - we refuse to give her the likes of Pedigree as our last dog I'm sure had ADHD because of it! (tongue in cheek - but I want something with no additives).
When we go for walks she seems to do nothing but sniff out something to roll in, or some form of s
t to eat.
She'll find some dog/cat/fox poo and then she'll run away to eat it. Her recall is great, unless she has a mouth full of s
t, in which case she'll berate me by showing me said s
t and running off to finish it.
Once she's eaten it, she's back to her normal self.
She gets a 30/45 min walk at 6am, 45 mins at lunch time and a good hour off the lead at around 9pm.
Yet she still seems to enjoy eating s
t more than the food we buy for her.
Any advice?

We had this with a GSD some years ago. The appalling breath aside we were worried it might be a sign of a health issue, the vet's response was, 'some kids pick their nose, some bite their nails, some dogs eat sh*t'.
Might be worth trying fresh pineapple or marmite on toast, which were both recommended as a 'cure' by a police dog handler we know.

My mrs sister has a golden retriever who absolutely f
king loves eating s
t. They have tried pineapple. Putting chilli sauce on the s
t IF they get to it first, trying to distract with treats, electric shock collar. Plus the good old shouting and smacking which made other behaviour worse.
Their biggest problem I think is they expect instant success. So tried them all once (except the smacking and shouting
). In my albeit limited dog owning experience, changing behaviour is rarely overnight. So maybe try some of these for a prolonged period of time. Obviously only the humane ones
. It's taken me 7 months to get seb half decent on the lead round the estate and to the park. I really should have learned to roller skate... It's just all SOO EXCITING.
Good luck sorting it because that smell is just awful isn't it

We have a Westie & a working cocker spaniel, they both do it, always have done. They both eat cat s
t, the spaniel likes fox, the Westie prefers rabbit, they'll both eat cow pats.
Just one of those things, as long as they don't eat their own I'm not too bothered, just don't let them lick you!

It eats poo because it's a lovely, intelligent animal, Im guessing you let it lick your hands, maybe even your kids faces? aaww, sweet.
What's your problem? My guess is you are a 'cat person'?Grow up.
Cat poo is like a Marathon, but without the hazelnuts, some dogs just love it, mine would hunt it down if a cat had been in the garden.
Cow poo, as a puppy went into a field and thought he had won the lottery could not get enough despite being chased by me. A swollen dog went home, lay down and then was very ill. The stain looked like a full size print of Africa once we had cleaned it up as best as possible. The carpet needed to be replaced, there was no way it was ever coming clean again. He never ate cow muck again....

Vile isn't it... our Lab does this, cat flavour or his own, but only when fresh and warm....!
If I can get out there before he goes on a s
t mission I've found shaving foam on the offending deposits is a quick deterrent, one of the few things he won't actually eat. Getting the shovel out works on the lawn at home, other than when he decided the contents of the rabbit/guinea pig hutch were fair game, when I foolishly dumped them on the compost heap....
...it took three washes to clean him up, and a shower for me as he proudly shook most of it off during the first wash!

Saves buying food and poop scooping.
Our eldest grey does it, breath like death, joking aside not funny.
Try a lower protein food, we always by dry food. Not too much protein as it makes greys nutty.
If the food is too rich the poop has lots of good stuff left once it passes through. Dogs being scavengers will devour anything that appears worth eating.
Both love a munch on cow pats and horse s
te.

Some animals will eat crap because the can often be beneficial bacteria in it. Especially if the crap comes from a Herbivore. Think Yakult to humans...We feed her James WellBeloved as it came highly recommended and have done since we got her.

She's a rescue, had her 12 months. When we first got her she'd bury her food in the garden for the next day. Behaviour we weren't used to.
She's such a well behaved dog 99% of the time! unbelievably loyal! always has to be close to you etc.
It's just the cat and fox poo she insists on either rolling in or eating,
