Petlog microchips moan
Discussion
Isn't it a rip off that you have to pay to update your contact details, names or address? No wonder you hear of so many reports where owners of chipped pets can't be contacted.
If you had a bank account, utility bill or a car V5C you would be outraged if you had to pay to amend these details. It also doesn't seem to matter who paid for the pet in the first place, pays their upkeep and treatment, if you have not logged yourself as the 'owner' which they have no way of verifying, then you cannot change the record to be the 'owner'.
Apparently, if lost, a vet won't release the cat unless the name on the microchip picks it up. Well, if that ever happens there will be one little cat stuck with them, for a long time in my case, despite the record having my email and phone number and muself paying for annual check ups, flea treatment etc.

How does this become a moan about vets! We have to check the details match there'd be no point in the chip otherwise would there, if we ignored not matching info and gave a pet out anyway?
And unless you are moving every 6 months then I don't think £5/£6 is that big a deal. I'm not sure they charge just for phone numbers but couldn't be sure.
People are lazt and forget so I don't think it's the fee that stops them changing details, most people don't even think about it so unfortunately this is an area the chip falls down.
Plus it's no like these sites are completely automated there are people employed to run them and be at the end of a phone 24/7.

You're missing my point. I'm not moaning about the vet. I'm moaning that you cannot freely update the information on the chip. The website allows you to self service update (only certain items) but it wasn't working properly hence I had to call and found out the above information. If it was working properly and the other fields could be updated too then you wouldn't need to call. And unless you are moving every 6 months then I don't think £5/£6 is that big a deal. Would a vet really not return a missing pet despite their clearly being an owner, records of paid treatment and insurance etc, because the name of the 'owner' on the chip is not the same as the person who is clearly looking after it? Surely if the contact number brings a person in but this person does not match the 'owner' field then why would they come in or why would they have their number listed?
I don't think the fee is a big deal though it's a bit of a pain that you have to sort it out yourself. When we told the vet that we were moving house they told us we'd have to contact Pet Log to update the chips, even though they'd set them up for us in the first place.

If you would have paid the one off fee for Petlog premium you can update the details as many times as you like.
Interesting. No one told us that. What is absurd is that Petlog become the authority of who is the 'owner' of a pet and charge you for the privilige. Regardless of what the microchip says on my cats, I am the owner and would defy anybody who attempted to retain my cats otherwise. When you register a microchip you could put the owner down as Donald Duck if you wanted. But when you want to change it you have to prove that Donald Duck is not the owner.
Have you even looked at their website? It clearly states that the Premium service allows as many updates as you like. And £15 is nothing compared to the cost of moving house.
There's also a form requesting change of owner.
Not unreasonably they say they will attempt to confirm with the previous owner.
Finally they don't have a monopoly - there's also Pettrac, Anibase and maybe more.
