Our little Tibetan Terrier puppy has taken to chewing the toilet mats we are using to toilet train her.

She has several other chew toys to occupy her and we give them to her to discourage chewing the mats but as soon as she can, she chews the mat.

Any solutions other than removing the mat altogether?

In my experience (lots of fostering of puppies) there isn't any real way to stop this as you obviously need to give them 24/7 access to it. And by the time they're old enough to know you don't want them to chew it, they should be peeing outside anyway. Just be grateful its chewing something that is disposable and cheap laugh

Thanks KFC, just a bit concerned she might choke on the bits though...

Try to catch your puppy just before she/he goes to bite the mat and replace with an item you want them to chew. Then lots of praise and a treat. This and bitter apple spray on the mat.

I think the only problem with the bitter apple spray is that it might stop the puppy going on to the pad - which kind of defeats the object. Our 16 week old Cockerpoo regularly destroys her puppy pads when she's not happy with being in her crate. What I would recommend though is the Pets at Home pads. They're much tougher than say the Bob Martin ones and it takes a real effort to actually destroy the pad itself. The outside edge is capable of a fair bit of punishment before the actual absorbent bit is damaged.

On the whole though I think it's one of those things. Puppies chew stuff. If you can give them something else to chew then this really is the best option.
