Looking at taking a short trip (7 days ish) over to France and I seem to recall the rules were changed recently meaning you could get a PP at fairly short notice.

Can anyone advise what the current cost and set up is?
Also, anyone travel on a PP with a dog that's tattooed not chipped?

I have read the govt guide lines and it seems all ok - but are the French ok with that?

Thanks!

Your vets should have all the info and prices, prob best give them a ring.

Basics are microchip if not done needs doing before rabies vaccine given. Then you need a vet who is qualified to sign a passport

You will need a vets in France to flea and tick treat your dog 48hrs before your return. Have to wonder if it is all worth it for just a week.

Also be aware of other diseases dogs can pick up in France, just as life threatening

As far as I know it MUST be a microchip.

Just used our doggy passports for the first time this year for our two doggies.

We took them to France too- very straightforward. Cost approx £100 per dog then it's just updated with vaccinations and rabies injections every year. I think it lasts 4 years or so but you can't let the vaccinations lapse even by a day iirc.

Things to bear in mind- we went eurotunnel simply because on a ferry (usual mode of travel for us to france) you would have to leave the pet in the car in the noisy hold) we thought this would stress them out no end.

Eurotunnel- simply arrive, can stretch their legs if they need it in the little doggy wee area or just go straight through in 35mins. Easy as that.

Returning is a tad more complicated- as above, we saw a vet locally to our Gite 2 days before we came back (it has to be 24hrs to 5days before returning to the UK) which is basically just a check up, stamp in the book and a tape worm tablet about 35euro each- bit much but oh well.

We were quite lucky in that where we stayed the nice chap organised it for us but it's not hard to explain- it's quite usual now- you can even take a tablet from the uk yourself, the vet just needs to stamp the book and sign it using 24hr clock.

Then when back to Calais- just follow the pet signs and park, again with an exercise area- show the paperwork at the desk and get back in.
No stress, was so easy we will definitely be doing it this way again!

One other thing to add in- eurotunnel is VERY expensive- a ferry used to cost us £30 return, but with E.T it came to £219. That was £155 for us and £16 each way per dog. We used Tesco Clubcard vouchers for our part but they don't cover the pet charge. Ferries also charge I think £15 each way per pet too.

Good luck and it is worth it if you are like us and don't ever want to leave your pooch at home or in kennels.

Thanks that's good info. Used the ET before a few times so would be going that route.
Back when it was the old scheme my vet quoted me £180 per dog (we have 3) so it adds up - but if its closer to £100 that's not too bad considering what it used to be.

Pretty much, there's a 3 week wait between the rabies vaccination and being able to travel. I think tattoos are acceptable as identification but suggest you double check, though microchips aren't expensive and will be required by law soon anyway.

I was going to mention the 3 week wait but was wording it really badly, so deleted it and forgot to rewrite it, thanks for noting that as it could be quite important! They do need to phone their vets ASAP aswell, even if to ck they have a vaccine in stock.
