Yep, that's a smooth (AKA common) newt, and I think you've probably identified the sex correctly too - it's not the best photo, but that does look like a male (they tend to be slightly darker and more heavily marked on the head than the females, when out of breeding condition; in breeding condition they have a big crest and are heavily spotted).
To be fair, they are the most common of the UK newt species overall, thought there are some areas where great crested newts are more prevalent locally.
