Thought this was a red admiral butterfly in flight until it rested and let me get a shot of it.

Have never seen one before, thought it was cool so posting it up for others.
Gloucester based so not coastline really

So much for camouflage to hide from predators... perhaps these moths are streetfighters who lure swifts, bats etc towards them and then beat the crap out of them.

Is it me or has there been a lot more butterflies than usual this summer? Perhaps it's due to all the hot weather we had.

I haven't noticed many moths particularly.

We had this in the garden yesterday, I know there's nothing to scale it to but it was massive! At least 3" long. Discovered it as the dog was barking at it! Elephant hawk moth caterpillar apparently. Look beautiful as a moth.
