I'll start - the Cotswolds.

Plus many smaller rural villages, mainly in the south.

Pretty much every day now there are notices of planning applications, approvals and denials for land at the edges of loads of villages in Sussex. There is no escaping the relentless onslaught and those villages that so many want to live in will soon have lost that charm. A sad indictment of our times.

Tbh the answers rural. It's rare to come across a scummy rural area despite the efforts of planners to import as many people as possible in to nice areas.

I spend almost no time in cities or towns. I never go anywhere in the Midlands or SE England.

So for me pretty much nowhere has gone to pot.

If it did, I'd find somewhere bijoux nearby with shepherd huts and stuff.

Back in April last year we had a long weekend break in Lincoln, and drove through Woodhall Spa when pottering around the countryside on the Saturday.

We both commented on how agreeable it seemed to be.

Brixton.

It still has an old skool charm, with an eclectic mix of cafes, bars and restaurants. The old skate park is still there and there's lots of Portuguese restaurants and music venues. Hopefully the area won't succumb to some kind of vanilla gentrification and keep its unique identity.

Not sure Cotswold residents would share the same view as the OP . I haven't been there for 25+ years but I'm fairly sure the migration of "celebrities" from the South East has rustled a few feathers . Others views ?

Seriously!

Only I am imagining you might be appalled at the multiculturalism in cities like Leicester....& yet it means having access to fabulous restaurants from the obvious Indian currys, through Italian, French, Afghani. Slovak, etc etc.....not to mention the ability to have a pub crawl to a dozen very decent pubs, couple of good theatres, great medical facilities....great museums, a king in the cathedral with a cool museum opposite....

Yes, like many cities, there is some crime, but we can walk anywhere in the city at any time without fear of trouble.

Rural is lovely - we are visiting pals in Reeth tomorrow for a few days - beautiful scenery, a few nice pubs, we will enjoy some walks and pub food......
......but no cinema/theatre, infrequent busses, no foreign restaurants, minimal local medical facilities.

Lovely to visit but frankly I'd be bored within a few weeks!

Ah, the racist, colonial white space of the British countryside. It's on borrowed time, but the house prices are doing their bit. Probably needs a wall building to keep Evesham at bay.

Victorian leisure destination. Wide avenues, lots of trees, only one coffee shop open after 16:00.

Oh, and real estate prices to rival Tunbridge Wells.

But most of Lincolnshire is unspoiled. People talk to strangers, tradesmen start work on site at 10:00 onwards, it’s nearly always windy, and everything is a long drive.

We love it.

It was being able to see people watching TV 10 miles away in their front rooms that I found deeply disturbing, but I'd definitely like to explore it further.

Herefordshire is rather nice, not Hereford itself but all around is great. Also all the villages along the Severn in Gloucestershire south of Gloucester. Frampton, Saul, Slimbridge, Berkeley, Ham etc down to Thornbury. Village cricket matches, busy boozers all rather lovely.

The southwest (Devon, Somerset, Dorset) are absolutely awful. You certainly don't want to go there. No sireee. Not at all. You might want to get to Cornwall (why?) but you'd be best to find another way round.
