Appears to be early this year.
In the last week or so had to remove some absolute whoppers but have a situation tonight.
Emergency whatsapp call, the missus has seen the biggest spider ever (its always the biggest). It's at the bottom of the bed on the carpet. When I come up with hand held dyson its moved under but has a leg sticking out. There's about a cm gap and I can see him scrunched up, he's a big lad / girl.
I move the pointy bit of the hoover to the leg, hit 'boost' and he's off, flies out from under the bed, missus screams, then he's straight back under .
The bed weighs a ton, as does the mattress and I ain't moving it.
Missus is in the spare room tonight ;-)

Well here it is. She took a pic before he dived under and scrunched up but I've seen bigger. He looked big diving back out with my head 2cm from the bed with my reading glasses on but with hindsight no real issues. The one in the lounge the other night was twice the size.
The biggest we had crawled out from the mother in laws wardrobe, she'd just moved in with us from a farmhouse, that sent the daughters mental.

The biggest one I've seen was probably around that size.
It was on my parent's bathroom wall many years ago, it easily spanned a 4" wall tile, it's front legas on the tile above, it's back legs on the tile below.
I grabbed my toothbrush and toothpaste and didn't go in the bathroom for a few days!

This, my lot think I'm odd that I like spiders. I do my utmost not to injure or kill them. I remember as a kid, i drowned one in the bath. my father (RIP) gave me an absolute b
king and made me feel terrible and really guilty. I'm glad he did, it gave me a much better appreciation for animals, especially wild animals all round.I can't fathom why people are scared of spiders, especially in the UK, they can't harm you in any way at all.
Got a few in the conservatory, a bee (worker type thing, decent size) got tangled up in a web, and I watched as the spider 1/4 of his size ran across and started attacking the bee, the bee was going mental, I think the spider thought it was Xmas morning, the bee did manage to wrestle itself away in the end though, I think he was a maximum revs on his wing beats some of the noises he was making!

Spiders making themselves a brew and snack is taking the mick a bit.Had some big ones recently. Mug and card to catch and release for me as well. Mind you, when the legs are bigger than the mug it's a bit tricky.
The big spiders can and will bite effectively and pierce human skin, they won't just run up and bite though but if you handle them roughly or trap a limb they will, it is not as bad as bee or wasp but more than a nettle.
I have had Scotophaeus blackwalli have a go when I was rescuing one from the sink, never quite got through the skin but was working on it and would not let go. Given its size I was surprised but it was strong enough to make the skin go white on my finger from the pressure.

You clearly know your UK spiders but for some balance, laybirds bite too. Another one here for catch and release, provided the dogs don't torture and eat it first
