Baffled and would appreciate brilliant suggestions!

Son, who will be seven in March - bright, active, outdoorsy but easily sidetracked by computer games! Wants an XBox or a Nintendo DS for Christmas but we're not mad keen. We'd compromise on a tablet I suppose.

Any suggestions to make Christmas morning and 2017 a joy to all concerned?

Ours are geeky (like their parents), so are already maxed with tablets and this xmas will be xbox time, however, oldest (8) would love to get into archery and also loves cycling - MTB? Also stuff like snow boarding lessons etc would go down well with ours (based on class mates reactions). Also our e-combat birthday party is pretty much rated as best one in the class, but helped by a June bday.

Robot Kit

Lego Mindstorms

Snap circuits or similar:

http://www.elenco.com/product/productdetails/proje...

I had loads of fun with the latter as a child.

Snap circuits didn't have much longevity with ours. Kano kit was a total waste of money, used once, I'll probably reformat and use as a Pi.

To add - he already has a bike (a Frog - superb, wish they did adult bikes!).

And we're quite time poor - football twice a week (three if he has a match), Kumon maths once, Panto rehearsals twice a week to February, Russian lessons . . . so probably don't want to take up any additional activities.

Probably get him a 1/35 model tank kit as an extra present (for me!) . . . just can't think of the main prezzie.

I'd buy him the Xbox if that is what he wants.

wait what?? you would rather buy a 6yr old a tablet instead of a nindendo DS? madness, I'd go for the DS.

Aside from Lego, remote controll cars, toys/action figures. look at what cartoons/tv shows he likes, get anything related to that. or when you take him to the supermarket walk down the toy isle with him and see what grabs him.

Got one of these for my lad: http://www.argos.co.uk/product/4452128

Annoyingly £50 when purchased but as part of a 3 for 2 offer. Nothing is every as much of a bargain as it may seem.

Our 7 year old is desperate for an 'xbox' (mainly as his friends older brothers have one so he gets to play it when he goes around their houses).

The compromise is that we've ordered him an Nintendo Classic Mini (https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Misc-/Nintendo-Classic-Mini-Nintendo-Entertainment-System/Nintendo-Classic-Mini-Nintendo-Entertainment-System-1124287.html) to see how he gets on with him.

My concern is that he already spends (IMO) far too much time in front of a screen (Tablet, phone or tv)

tamiya r/c car like this?

He can build it himself/help you, and then he can build jumps etc out of old wood. You must drive it outside, so he can get some air. And you can modify it...

I'm hoping to get one for my 6 year old this christmas...

remembering back to Christmas 1991 when I was 6, my parents bought my a Scalextric set.

A bit more tangible than an Xbox perhaps?

Has he written a Christmas list yet?

Scalextric and Lego are always a good shout
Nerf guns
Action Man/action figures (whatever he is into i.e Star Wars, Superheros etc.)

Mine wants a table football table, a science kit, a spy kit, telescope and a lego death star
