I found out today that one of our customer service reps has had her contract terminated. She had been with the company for 3 months and insisted on starting almost every discussion with "so" even though she had been warned about it.

Her boss told her it was "unprofessional and gave a poor image of the company".

I thought it was a little harsh but she was an annoying bint.

It's very common now, and very irritating.

Seems fair. I'd like to do the same with the 'can I get' people.

Nowadays, OPs regularly start threads with the words, "So I....."

She could walk in to a 'public understanding of science' role on the BBC.

There is no defence against being sacked in the first three months for being annoying.

That is probably the best reason for getting sacked there is!

True. But I am not sure I would want to work for a company who decided to get rid of someone for starting every conversation with "So," as irritating as that is. What next? Getting rid of people who use conjunctions to start sentences?

Making it easy to fire people in the first two years was a good thing. Helps people find companies that suit them, and companies find people that suit them. Companies full of good staff perform better, and are nicer places to work.

And gives staff an incentive to raise their game, and stop doing annoying things that they have been warned not to do.

Very little sympathy here. She might meet the love of her life at her next job.

Fired for using "So" isn't quite the same as someone who isn't suitable for the job if that's the real reason she was let go.

I was hoping the story would involve the word as a single syllable response to a boss frown

Which it wouldn't have been.

If only this rule was brought in for people who say "myself" instead of "me" and/or "yourself" instead of "you". As soon as you get someone on the other end of the phone starting this sort of sub-literate nonsense, you know you might as well hang up.

Or as the BT chap said to me the other day "we can't do nothing about it".

It doesn't take two years to work out if someone fits in. A year is plenty of time.
