I was on that massive sand dune at Arcachon totally oblivious, and my dad rang saying "son, the world's gone mad". Of course, I didn't believe him at first but as he's ex-RAF and not the type I was persuaded pretty quickly. We piled back to the town we were staying and it was crazy. Every bar/cafe just had people gathered round small portable tellies, aghast.

Working at a Nat West branch in London. People were coming in telling us what had happened. The branch manager gave us instructions for what to do if we turned up in the morning and a plane was sticking out of the roof.
All very sobering. I remember the train ride home, about 10 people gathered around 1 bloke, all reading 1 copy of the evening standard together.

A tiny island off the coast of Athens, again oblivious to what was going on until later that evening when I called home.
Spend the rest off the week trying to get as much imformation as possible from other brits and generally feeling rubbish/scared.
The plane flight back was terrifying.

Seriously, on the production floor, having a new piece of equipment being assembled going down its first Line Trial.
Seemed to stop somewhat and lost its major significance.
I was at RAF Linton on Ouse, doing my annual Common Core Skills training - weapons, bio, first aid etc. That night I went on guard, amber alert state and stayed on guard all week.
The NAFFI shop was robbed while we were on duty
The atmosphere was so weird, tense but people rallied round and brought us pizzas, curries, party food to the guard room. Caught a couple of stupid officers trying to sneak some girls into camp, including the guy I was seeing!
Also challenged 2 young officers who had just smashed a glass door and tried to leg it out of camp.
Watching 24 hour news constantly, seeing the footage now makes my stomach lurch, it's just awful.

Indeed, I was at my mates, visiting him to see his new-born kid. Me, him, his missus, his two kids and the new baby just sat on sofa dumbstruck. Remember thinking it must have been mid air collision that just happened to take place over wtc. Drove back home down m1 into london later that day, roads deserted. Very odd day.Mate lost his brother, clearly still having massive impact on family, dreadful business.
I was watching Neighbours too, my daughter was out playing, my son sat in his high chair playing with his Thomas trains, my husband (as he was then) was working nights in an aerospcae factory. The news cut in straight after Neighbours and we just couldn't believe what we were seeing, then watched the second one hit, up till that point we both thought it was an accident.
When I heard about the Pentagon, I tried to phone my friend who lives near there, and i know her husband does a lot of travelling, finally managed to get through to her later that night, her husband had flown out of Dulles that morning to SF, he actually had a choice of two flights, I guess he took the right one, but he was stranded in SF for the week. She is a deeply Christian person, and to be honest i was rather amused by her very non-Christian comments that night.
We also heard from another friend who is Jewish, apparently there was armed Marines guarding the kids' school, and then we heard that one of childrens' school mates had actually been on one of the NY planes.
Very surreal day, seems like a lifetime ago, but also seems like yesterday.
