I thought this was rather interesting. It graphically illustrates what we as a planet have been (openly) up to during the space age.

Or at least restricting our warp speed, as having access to warp 10 made all the stories completely worthless...

There was indeed a brief Warp 5 speed limit due to environmental reasons in ST:TNG nerd
